Marcus Smart Earns All-NBA First Team Recognition

Marcus Smart’s career with the Boston Celtics has been filled with ups and downs. As a sixth-round draft pick in 2014, he spent most of his rookie season sitting on the bench.

Now, however, he’s a full-time starter and one of the NBA’s most complete point guards. His great floor generalship helped propel Boston to the NBA Finals last year.

1. Defensive Player of the Year

For nearly three decades, the Defensive Player of the Year award has gone to big men who protect the paint and block shots. But last week Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart became the first guard to win this coveted honor since Gary Payton in 1995-96.

Smart is an imposing defender who can be counted on from any spot on the court. He also possess confidence and pass-first playmaking ability, which allow him to stifle opponents’ top scorers while being known for his hustle.

He was selected with the sixth overall pick in 2014 by the Boston Celtics and has quickly established himself as an essential member of their defense. Despite being a small guard, Smart has made quite an impact on defense, earning himself a place among fan favorites.

For the 2018-19 season, he averaged 13.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game on an efficient level. Furthermore, he ranked in the top 10 of several defensive categories such as steals, blocks and defensive win shares.

2. Rookie of the Year

Marcus Smart of the Boston Celtics has been named 2021-22 KIA NBA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming only the second guard in over 25 years to earn this distinction.

At 28 years old, he finished the regular season ranked seventh in steals per game (1.68), tied for sixth overall with 119 steals, and also recovered 75 loose balls – good enough to tie him for fourth in the league with 75 recoveries.

He started each of the 71 games he played and finished with a career high 3.2 defensive rebounds per game. Additionally, he dished out an NBA-record 107 assists to rank second on his team.

In addition to winning the KIA NBA Defensive Player of The Year award, Smart was also named to the All-NBA Second Team and earned Rookie of the Month honors in April. He is currently averaging 11.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game while playing 22 minutes per game.

Smart had a difficult start to his career, but eventually found success in the league. During his first year, he suffered several small injuries that prevented him from playing some games. Nevertheless, he still managed to stay healthy throughout the rest of the year.

He eventually made his full-time Celtics debut during the 2015-16 season and had some remarkable games. His triple-double against the Phoenix Suns in January 2016 and career high 26 points against Oklahoma City Thunder were two examples.

3. All-NBA First Team

Marcus Smart has been an outstanding defender for the Boston Celtics throughout his NBA career, earning All-NBA First Team recognition for a record third time. This recognition is especially meaningful considering Boston’s stellar defense this season has propelled them to within 1.5 games of Miami Heat for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Smart, a two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, led Oklahoma State to an NCAA tournament bid before being selected by Boston in the 2014 draft. The All-NBA First Team consists of six regular starters. Mikal Bridges and Jahlil Okafor from the Phoenix Suns as well as Milwaukee Bucks center Rudy Gobert have been selected for a sixth straight year to this elite group. On the All-NBA Second Team are three other guards – Boston Celtics Marcus Smart and Robert Williams III from Boston; Miami Heat big man Bam Adebayo from Philadelphia 76ers; and Philadelphia 76ers guard Matisse Thybulle from Philadelphia 76ers.

4. All-Defensive Second Team

On Friday night, the NBA announced that Marcus Smart of the Boston Celtics had been named to its All-Defensive Second Team. As a key member of their top-ranked defense this season, Smart recorded an impressive 1.7 steals per game and 19 games with at least three steals.

On January 11th 2014, he tied his career high in assists with 15 against the Charlotte Hornets and grabbed 13 rebounds against West Virginia Mountaineers to set a new mark for himself.

He achieved his greatest success as a college player as a sophomore, recording 23 points, 10 assists and 5 steals in an impressive win against Gonzaga. As such, he earned himself the title of Naismith College Player of the Year finalist.

The All-NBA Third Team is composed of five NBA players selected by sportswriters each year. This roster includes two forwards, one center and two guards. The All-NBA First and Second Teams are the final cut each year.
